STORY:

Sourcing its ingredients from women farmers in the dry North of Ghana, All Pure Nature strengthens their livelihoods as they also carry out the first stages of processing. The finishing and packaging for the products also brings stable livelihoods to women in Accra city. Among All Pure Nature’s largest customers are fair trade networks in the USA.

STORY:

Arbor Oils provides employment creating oils and perfumes using wild harvested African botanic ingredients, leading to a new source of income for several communities in Northern Kenya. Much of the packaging of the products is made locally, such as the wooden bowls and banana boxes for the soap. This additional involvement supports local artisans and increases the benefit to the local community.

Cinnabar Green

STORY:

Is a natural cosmetics company founded in 2004 and based in Laikipia, Kenya. All ingredients for its products are sourced either from its own farm or from groups of small holder farmers in the region. Products are manufactured and packaged on site at their plant in the arid area on the lower north western slopes of Mount Kenya. The ingredients are distilled, processed into product and packaged on site.

Founded in Ghana in 1996, Ele Agbe Company Ltd became known for its high quality ornamental beads, original jewelry designs, and handmade home décor. In 1999, Ele Agbe added hand-crafted shea butter cosmetics to its product line and began exporting worldwide.

Ele Agbe employs over 50 people, most of them women, and offers training programs for under-educated youths. The mission of Ele Agbe, which means “God is Alive” in Ewe, is to enable women and youth in Ghana’s rural Areas to gain sustainable livelihoods through developing and producing quality products for the local and international market. To promote female enterprise in rural areas, Ele Agbe has established the Network of African Women Entrepreneurs (NAWE).

STORY:

Is a women’s cooperative based in South Sudan. The 400 women in Sudan gather the shea nuts, cold-press them and craft these premium products under the brand name “LuluLife_”. Their colleagues in Kenya lead the marketing. Lulu life provides training in literacy, worker-ownership and business management to local women producers.

Muliru

STORY:

Naturub ointment is a fully natural preparation for the treatment of muscle ache, rheumatism, arthritic joints, bruises, lumbago, neuralgia and sciatica.

Naturub is produced by the Muliru Farmers’ Cooperative of Kenya who have received support from the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICEPE). Through the innovation of Naturub the farmers have a sustainable means to add value to their produce. This brings employment to the locality and also supports sustainable utilisation of medicinal plants beside the Kakamega forest in Kenya.

STORY:

Swazi Secrets began life as a project to help poor rural Swazi women to generate income from the natural products that grow around them. It is now owned by its Member Groups of rural suppliers and is expanding its horizons to also assist them in a number of social developments, in particular the formation of Self Help Groups and a Rural Livelihoods Programme.

Swazi Indigenous Products (SIP) is a full member of WFTO, the World Fair Trade Organisation, and also a founder member of SWIFT, the Swaziland Fair Trade Network. SIP is 100% owned by its 2,400 rural women suppliers. In 2012, the co-op received the Equator Prize, a UNDP initiative to recognize and advance local sustainable development solutions for people, nature and resilient communities.
